About Me
Hey there! I’m Julia Hess (She/Her), a Chinese-born, Philly-grown bi-coastal filmmaker and director. I split my time between Los Angeles and the Big Apple working on various projects throughout the year, while ofcourse finding the time to return to my roots for a good Philly cheesesteak.
Currently, we’re on the film festival circuit for the latest film I directed, Sincerely, Your Friend, written by Loren Maxine and Cambria Maey, produced by Loren Maxine Productions, Generation Networks, and Scira Studios. The film stars Leila Henry; based on a true story, Nia reads aloud a letter from the heart that details her true feelings when it comes to battling her mental health.
Let’s Go Camping (2022) directed by myself, written by Jurnee Woo, produced by Loren Maxine, Jurnee Woo, Justin Whiplash, Loren Maxine Productions, Generation Networks, and Scira Studios is also on the film festival circuit currently. Starring Leila Henry, Brian Jimenez, Jurnee Woo, and Joe Leonard. In this comedic short film, three friends decide to go camping and find themselves in a spooky situation.
My dream is to direct and produce coming-of-age narrative films, family comedies, & dark comedies. I’m passionate about telling diverse and authentic stories through documentaries, scripted content, digital content, and commerical advertising.
Growing up as a Chinese-adoptee in America, I struggled to find tv shows and movies with characters that looked like me or any person of color. As a director and producer, i’m excited to be in the position to bringing more diversity to on and off the screen.
